The cycling world turned its attention to Emporia, Kansas, this weekend for the Unbound Gravel event. The event, which is open to all levels, is seen as the crown jewel in the gravel scene. Ian Boswell, a former WorldTour road-racer, took the men’s title in a two up sprint. It was Lauren De Crescenzo who took the women’s title, some 16 minutes ahead of last year’s champion.

Kiel Reijnen, a WorldTour road rider for Trek Segafredo, was also on the start list at Unbound Gravel. His story is simply bonkers. After around 46 km (into the 330 km race), Reijnen broke his wheel after catching his rim on a rock. One of the Unbound rules is that you cannot accept help, unless it’s availble to everyone. So he ran, yes he ran, 18 miles BAREFOOT, to the next aid station.

Finding motivation should be easy after all the time we spent locked down last year. In theory, yes, but we all know that’s not true. A route doesn’t always have to be fast, epic, gnarly or anything other than just the simple pleasure of seeing the world by bike and reconnecting with it all again. Smiling in the sunshine. Maybe that’s all it takes sometimes.

Tro-Bro Léon is an annual men’s pro cycling event held in Brittany, France. The race is not a normal road race though, it has over 30 km of ‘ribin’, or as we call it, gravel.
It's so much more than a race — it's an unpreditable, historic, and once-in-a-lifetime experience. Did we mention the best-placed Breton rider wins a piglet?
