Mathieu van der Poel's custom pink Canyon Speedmax for Giro d'Italia time trial | Cyclingnews

This week’s newsletter is looking pretty in pink. The Giro d’Italia kicked off last weekend and it’s already heating up. We also feature one of the craziest challenges we’ve seen and a soundtrack to your next New Bike Day. Enjoy!

Hello,

How’re you doing?

I’m back in the UK, Grimsby to be specific for this week’s newsletter. I had a small gap in my calendar and haven’t seen family for over four months so I thought it was a good time to come home.

I spent last night at Silverstone Sport Engineering Hub in a wind tunnel to optimise my time trial position and setup. It really is fascinating seeing how little adaptations to my position can change. Simply changing where I hold my handlebars can save me 10-watts.

Happy pedalling,

Joe

Grand Tour Time

The Giro d’Italia has well and truly kicked off. The race started in style with who else but Mathieu van der Poel taking the pink jersey after Stage 1 and we got to see a custom Canyon colour wave thanks to him.

The first mountain test came on the famous Mount Etna, with MVDP eventually losing the jersey and German KƤmna taking the win.

The race is hotting up, and with two and a half weeks still to go, it’s anybody’s to win.

An Everest in the Arctic

Jonas Orset is a professional gravel rider and adventurer. He also completed the northernmost Everest recorded. An Everest is where you do multiple reps of a single hill until you reach the accumulative height of Mount Everest.

Orset’s -20°C on Arctic snow and ice is one of those crazy stupid adventures that you can only admire. This is his story.

F1 Meets Cycling

Last week we covered the BMC x Red Bull superbike, and this week there is more F1 x Cycling news too. Tiffany Cromwell is an Australian pro-cyclist with the Canyon-SRAM team, and Valtteri Bottas is an F1 driver for Alfa Romeo.

This sport ā€˜power couple’ travels across the world, competing in road and gravel races, as well as stopping at the odd Grand Prix along the way. What a life…

The most expensive kit ever?

We’ll all agree that cycling kit can be expensive, but it’s normally in the hundreds, not thousands of pounds.

Adam Yates, who took a shock win in the Giro d’Italia time-trial showed off his Ā£2,750 skinsuit. Considering he won, it’s a worthwhile investment, but still, it’s a pretty penny for a bit of fabric!

Compostable bottles?

While cycling is largely a green sport, the professional side of the sport is certainly questionable. From the number of cars to single-use plastics, the traveling circus certainly isn’t good for the environment.

On average, each pro rider uses 755 bottles per year, and most of them are single-use. What’s the answer? Well, maybe a compostable version…

Event pacing

A few of my friends completed the Traka 360 the other week, an epic 360 km gravel race around Catalonia. My first question to them: How the hell do you pace that?

Whether your event is 30 km, 300 km, or anything in between, there is plenty to consider when it comes to pacing. Environment, temperature, and race tactics, it’s a minefield but this article helps to smooth some things out.

There are close calls, and there are close calls. The peloton must’ve been counting their lucky stars that they weren’t three seconds faster on this stretch of road…

Fixed gear racer to Gravel extraordinaire, Colin Strickland truly knows how to: A) ride his bicycle and B) always be in the cool discipline of the sport. After growing up on a Texan farm, Strickland came into cycling in his early 20s. From winning Red Hook crits to the biggest Gravel races on the planet, Strickland even turned down a World Tour road contract.

A man that is true to his path and a man that doesn’t follow the typical bike racing mould. This podcast is a cracker.

Is there anything better than New Bike Day? Now, have you ever wondered what the soundtrack to new bike day would be? No, me neither. But, this video is a pop-punk music video trying to do exactly that.

It’s a little odd, but I enjoyed it a lot.

N+1 New Brand šŸ‘‹šŸ»

In this new part of the Newsletter, each week we’re going to introduce one of the brands that we work with at N+1.

CORE | Core Body Temperature Monitoring (@corebodytemp) / Twitter

This week we are introducing… CORE.

CORE Body Temperature sensor allows athletes to monitor their internal temperature. For sport and exercise, the importance of core body temperature is straight-forward; when you get hot, your power output drops. With CORE, you’re able to see this in advance and plan accordingly.
